Our Threatened Environment

Smokestacks pumping pollution into our skies, factories discharging wastes into our rivers, bulldozers tearing up farmland and forests . . . hasn't New Jersey's environment had enough?

And what about the toll on our health? Every year polluters put enough soot into our air to cut short the lives of thousands of New Jerseyans. We need to do more to stop the abuse of our environment.

Standing Up To Powerful Interests

Fortunately, New Jerseyans support strong protections for our environment. Yet decisions about our air and water quality, and the fate of our open spaces, are too often shaped by powerful, self-interested industry insiders.

Consider our open spaces: Ignoring public opinion, powerful developers are paving over the green places in our towns that provide wildlife habitat, stop run-off pollution from flowing into our waterways and put the Garden in Garden State—to the tune of 50 acres a day. It's time to stand up to the powerful interests that are trampling on our environment.

Tough-Minded Advocacy

To overcome the opposition of powerful special interests, Environment New Jersey relies on independent research and tough-minded advocacy.

For example, our research cast a spotlight on serious public health risks and problems with the health of beach water in New Jersey and across the nation. Meanwhile, our advocacy helped 45 New Jersey waterways gain the Clean Water Act’s strongest protections over the past 4 years.
