The New Jersey Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) program officially started on January 1st. One critical piece of the program, a limit on tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases, will not go forward unless President-elect Obama reverses a decision by the Bush Administration to block thirteen states from implementing it.
Environment New Jersey congratulates Lisa Jackson and praises President-Elect Obama for appointing her today to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Trenton - As President Elect Obama and a new Congress prepare to meet today’s economic and environment challenges, Environment New Jersey released a report that lays out a blueprint for how we can power America for the 21st century, protecting our environment while revitalizing our economy.
President-elect Obama’s choice of Lisa Jackson to head the Environmental Protection Agency represents a 180 degree turnaround for the United States on the environment.
Today Governor Corzine released a revised and final version of his fifteen-year energy master plan. It is a solid road map to guide New Jersey on the path to a clean energy future, with several components that need further reconsideration.
The governor’s strong support for certain clean energy initiatives is laudable, and the right way forward for New Jersey’s economy and environment. Other aspects of his plan, however, miss important job creation opportunities and threaten to seriously undermine his efforts to fight global warming.
Environment New Jersey praised Governor Corzine and New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President Jeanne Fox for establishing the most visionary program to promote off-shore wind energy in the nation.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has chosen Garden State Offshore Energy, a joint venture between PSEG and Deepwater Wind, to build the state’s first offshore wind farm. Once completed, the project will be among the first offshore wind farms in the nation, positioning New Jersey as a leader in creating new “green jobs” and tackling global warming.
While everyone from Governor Corzine to your next door neighbor will proclaim that they support renewable energy and care about protecting the environment, many laws actually discourage pro-environmental practices. Local zoning ordinances, land use laws, and other state and local regulations can make it so burdensome to make the right choice for the environment that it becomes unlikely that people will pursue these beneficial strategies.
Groups gathered today at the Jersey shore to decry the bowing of Congress to Big Oil, opening nation's coast to offshore oil and gas drilling activities, and condemn President Bush's message that destroying coasts is not enough. Groups called upon elected officials to stand firm against drilling interests and removing the long-standing ban to protect the nation's coast from the harmful and polluting effects of offshore drilling.
